This is the Fall 2026 semester diary. We are currently in August of 2026 and we're having fun. :=) This diary is to keep track of my schoolwork and the progression of my mental state through the continuation of the year. I kind of decided to do this on a whim; part boredom and part interest in improving my writing. I'm sure my psychiatrist would enjoy seeing me keep track of tasks in such a...creative way.

In Bertrand Russell’s “The Problems of Philosophy”, he positions philosophy as invaluable because it encourages continual questioning of beliefs and assumptions, can expand our worldview, and frees humanity from monotonous, practical thinking. Russell speaks directly to those who claim philosophy is “useless trifling” (sec. 1, par. 15) by taking that claim and analyzing the value in its apparent weakness. Philosophy lacks the definite answers that other fields provide, and yet people continue to bother wrestling with abstract problems; why is this? The aim of philosophical inquiry is the procurement of knowledge; doing so requires a broad understanding from multiple disciplines that ultimately yields a richer understanding of our own existence. Furthermore, the search for knowledge also demands a critical examination of our belief systems that many benefit from. Much of what people believe is inherited through culture, habit, or convenience; oftentimes these thoughts go unchallenged. The more one delves into philosophical inquiry, the more one travels “into the region of liberating doubt” (Russell, sec. 8, par. 15), interrogating our inherited convictions and allowing questioning whether these claims are well-reasoned or unexamined. It is this specific function, unifying multiple disciplines while also challenging the foundations of belief, that distinguishes philosophy from other sciences. Russell accurately characterizes philosophy as the “mother of all sciences,” as every established field originally emerged from philosophical inquiry. For example, physics was once known as “natural philosophy” and psychology as “mental philosophy.” Questions from these sciences that are provided with definite answers are categorized into the sciences, and the unanswered “form the residue which is called philosophy” (Russell, sec. 5, par. 15) and serve as the foundation for generating the next round of scientific questions. Philosophy serves as the “mother” for these fundamental inquiries; with definite methodology and testing, they eventually earn their place within humanity’s vast library of knowledge. As long as humanity endures, this continuous cycle of inquiry will persist; thus, philosophy is never a completed subject, but rather an origin point that constantly gives birth to scientific disciplines and questioning.
